What Is Diarrhea And How To Treat It Naturally?

There are two ways to define diarrhea. It can be defined as loose, watery stools or as changes in the frequency of bowel movements. While they are usually experienced simultaneously, both conditions don’t necessarily need to be concurrent. There are other conditions that are often mistaken for diarrhea but their causes and treatments differ.

The four conditions that are often referred to as diarrhea are incontinence of stool, rectal urgency, incomplete evacuation and bowel movements immediately after eating a meal. Incontinence is the inability to hold bowel movements until one can get to a toilet.

Incomplete evacuation means that even after having a bowel movement it feels like another movement is necessary even though passing another stool is difficult. Rectal urgency is the sensation that if a toilet is not available immediately there will be incontinence. These conditions actually refer to more serious problems and a doctor should be consulted.

One of the problems that arise from having diarrhea is that it is altogether too easy to get dehydrated from loss of fluids that have been excreted in the stools.

This is a very real danger especially in babies and young children. There are bottled drinks that have electrolytes in order to replace those lost through dehydration. Ginger and blackberry tea are effective home remedies and rice and rice water is also said to be especially beneficial.

If the condition persists for any length of time medical attention should be obtained. While there are many foods that can cause extremely loose stools, if diarrhea is accompanied by pain or fever you should see your doctor as soon as possible.
