What Is Colon Irrigation and is it Healthy?
Have you ever driven through the countryside and seen those huge metal contraptions that farmers move about their produce fields in order to water them efficiently? That is much like the concept of colon irrigation. Colon irrigation is sometimes referred to as colon hydrotherapy. It is simply a method of periodically flushing out the colon, or lower intestines. Water is introduced to the colon through the rectum. We often refer to this as an “enema.”
Sometimes doctors want to do diagnostic tests, such as colonoscopies. In order to get a good look at the colon it is necessary for it to be empty. They flush out the colon with fluids that often contain chemicals which some people are uncomfortable with. The procedure itself provides a measure of discomfort, and knowing that chemicals are being forced into the colon is a cause for concern. Unfortunately, in order for these diagnostics to be effective, the doctor may need to use certain substances.
On the other hand, there are people who use colon hydrotherapy in order to maintain a healthy colon. The “flush” it out periodically to clear it of any undigested foods or waste materials that are not eliminated in normal bowel movements. Some people use this method either as an alternative to a fiber supplement, while others use them in combination.
Simply put, colon irrigation is flushing water through the colon in order to thoroughly cleanse it. There are advocates who swear by irrigating routinely to promote a healthy colon. Others irrigate for medical purposes. It is thought of as an invasive procedure because something foreign (the enema itself) is being introduced into a body cavity. It serves its purpose, however, and sometimes is a necessary procedure.
