The Benefits Of Probiotics

There is much debate currently as to just how to define the term ‘probiotics,’ so the most popular definition at the moment is the one offered by the World Health Organization. They define probiotics as “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” And by the term we can deduce that ‘microorganisms’ are so small that they can only be seen under a specific, high-powered microscope. These organisms include yeasts, bacteria and viruses.

But what exactly are the ‘benefits’ that they offer us as the ‘host?’ For starters, probiotics can effectively replace the good bacteria that are necessary to digestion, and that have been killed off when taking antibiotics. You have all seen symptoms of this when you have either ended up with diarrhea or a yeast infection from taking a course of penicillin or other common antibiotics. Using a good probiotic supplement naturally treats these conditions and the good guys are replaced in your digestive and urinary tracts so that they can go back to normal operating conditions. Remember, antibiotics are non-discriminate. They kill the good guys as well as the bad guys. Probiotics repopulate the good guys.

Live yogurt cultures and acidophilus in milk are two common probiotics that we are all familiar with. Perhaps we didn’t know that they were called probiotics, but we have all heard of milk and yogurt. While milk and yogurt are good sources if our digestive system is functioning well, there may not be sufficient quantities to counteract problems. Having a good probiotic supplement in our daily vitamin therapy is always advisable. If you have any concerns, always talk to your doctor before beginning any new supplements.
