Psyllium Benefits More Than The Colon
Psyllium is best known as a bulk-laxative with positive effects on the stomach, spleen and colon. But psyllium is so much more. It contains several vitamins and minerals among other chemical compounds which benefit not only the colon but the entire body as well. Psyllium seeds are nutritious because they contain enzymes, protein, fats, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids.
When used as part of a colon detox program they are effective in that they draw toxins away from the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thereby cleaning mucus and toxic build up. It is also said to be used by those individuals who have yeast infections, candida. While it doesn’t kill candida, it does block the absorption of metabolic waste which candida produces. The symptoms of candida are caused by this metabolic waste.
Vital nutrients contained in psyllium are calcium, chromium, iron, selenium, zinc, vitamin A, and of course, dietary fiber. You can see by the list that several of those are essential nutrients for a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. Zinc has long been known as an adjunct to vitamin C to ward off and diminish the effects of the common cold. Chromium is thought to assist the body in using insulin more efficiently. It is also believed that with the help of chromium, insulin draws glucose from the blood and taken to cells for energy.
Psyllium may be most commonly used to promote a healthy colon, but it also benefits the entire body. It is the most widely used form of fiber in supplements, but it is also added as fiber to breakfast cereals. For such a tiny, little seed, it sure is packed with power.
