Is Colon Detoxification Safe?
Many advocates of colon detoxification contend that not only is it safe but it is also highly beneficial to your overall health. The premise behind detoxifying the intestines is that undigested food sits there putrefying, which in turn causes or promotes the growth of disease causing pathogens such as a whole array of bacteria, viruses and parasites. By detoxifying or thoroughly cleansing the colon these pathogens are flushed out of the system, hopefully before they can do any damage.
The ingredients in most Detox formulas are natural and organic. Proponents contend that it is safer to cleanse the colon by natural means than by invasive procedures such as Bowel Irrigation. This is a procedure where fluids, often containing chemical compounds, are forced through the intestines through the anus. You may know this procedure as an “enema.” Many people believe that not only is the procedure itself not safe, but the chemicals contained in the fluid may be dangerous if there is a leak in the intestines and chemicals seep through to the peritoneal cavity.
The main ingredient in most detox supplements is psyllium which is nothing more than a high-fiber powder manufactured from the Plantago Psyllium seed. In fact, psyllium is deemed so safe that it is now included in many, if not most, heart-healthy high fiber breakfast cereals. Of course it is there in smaller amounts, but it vouches for its safety if it has been approved for human consumption by the FDA.
Before taking any detox product for the first time it is always wise to consult your physician. If you have any underlying medical conditions that would pose a risk he/she would be able to advise you at that time.
