Is Colon Cleansing Dangerous?

Colon cleansing is becoming more popular because we are continually being warned about the dangers of toxic build up in the digestive tract. Many advocates claim that cleansing built up bacteria and toxins is essential to maintaining a healthy colon. It could be that you are considering detoxification but are apprehensive because you fear it may be dangerous. Maybe one of your friends told you about it and you have been wanting to try to cleanse your colon for the benefits you heard it provides. It is always suggested that you consult your doctor before you use any products or supplements for the first time. If there is any reason why you should not use any specific products your doctor will be able to advise you at that time.

There is always the possibility that you could become dehydrated if you don’t follow some simple guidelines. While high fiber colon cleansing products are not known to have adverse side effects, people who take laxative might experience dehydration. While laxatives don’t really cleanse the colon they ARE known to cause dehydration if you don’t drink sufficient water. Laxatives can also pose a very real danger if you have kidney or heart disease. Laxatives formulated from sodium phosphate are known to cause an imbalance in your electrolytes. Remember, laxatives don’t totally cleanse the colon and should be used with caution if you are trying to induce a bowel movement. If you should take a laxative, drink plenty of water.

When using herbal supplements, be sure research the complete list of the ingredients. Just because a product is herbal does not mean there is no potential for harmful side effects. And once again, if you are unclear, talk to your doctor first.
