Is Colon Cleanse Effective Or Pointless?

When it comes to colon cleansing and whether or not it is good for you, there are two widely varying schools of thought. Those who advocate cleansing the colon adhere to the strict belief that many disease causing toxins need to be “flushed” periodically in order to maintain good health. On the other side, there are people who believe that colon cleansing may not be beneficial and may even be dangerous in some cases.

According to the May Clinic website, there is not sufficient scientific documentation to either validate or dispute the assertion that colon cleansing is a good practice. However, it goes on to state that most doctors only use colon cleansing in preparation for procedures such as colonoscopies. It further explains that the digestive system and the bowel eliminate naturally bacteria and waste material. It is their contention that the body does not need special diets, enemas or pills to do this. The author of the article, an M.D., states that most doctors don’t recommend colon cleansing for detoxification.

Advocates of colon cleansing, on the other hand, contend that periodic cleansing of the colon rids the body of harmful bacteria that build up in the intestines if not thoroughly cleansed periodically. Proponents of this school of thought believe that detoxification is necessary because bacteria sits there and festers if not cleansed periodically. It is their contention that toxins in the colon either cause or exacerbate diseases such as arthritis and asthma.

If you decide to try colon cleansing, colon detoxification, or colon irrigation as it is sometimes referred to, it is ALWAYS advisable to consult with your doctor first if you decide to try it.
