Is A Bulk-Forming Laxative Different From Those Chocolate Laxatives?

Everywhere we turn we are being urged to eat diets high in fiber and low in fat. It is said that high fiber diets are heart healthy diets because they aid in the digestion of foods and lower levels of bad cholesterol. It is common that when an individual is constipated relief can be found in a high-fiber, bulk-forming laxative. They are safer than those chocolate squares that have been around since before fire was invented in that they contain no harmful chemicals that can have serious side effects.

Bulk-forming laxatives are becoming increasing more popular simply because they are safer then chemical laxatives. Generally, they are available in OTC supplements that come in powder form, as a capsule, or in a pill. The most typical bulk-forming laxative contains psyllium, which is derived from a plant native to Pakistan, India, Asia and North Africa. The name of the plant is Plantago Psyllium, and it is the tiny gel coated seed that contains the fiber for laxatives. Plantago Psyllium is most commonly used for high-fiber laxatives and colon cleansing products.

Fiber that swells and forms a slick film when exposed to water is what causes a bulk-forming laxative to work. Other OTC laxatives simply clear out the lower colon, whereas bulk-forming laxatives cleanse the entire colon all the way through.

As with any supplement or medication, always consult your family doctor or physician before taking them, and only take the supplements you have been cleared by your doctor to take.
