IBS: Functional Disease of the Colon

One of the functional diseases of the colon is Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. IBS is characterized by diarrhea or constipation or an alternate of both, chronic abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort. The causes of IBS are unknown. When the colon or gastro-intestinal tract are studied under several tests after reporting of symptoms, no abnormalities can be detected. Usually, the triggers of IBS are infections or a stressful life event.

Since the causes are unknown, there is no cure for this disease. However, doctors often prescribe medicines to relieve the symptoms of the disorder. The following are what IBS sufferers commonly do or take in order to make their lives bearable:

1)Modification of diet – Knowing what triggers the symptoms is a great idea. Fats and fructose are usually avoided because they have been scientifically proven to trigger IBS symptoms.
2)Medication – Medicines for diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain are usually given to patients.
3)Psychotherapy – The dynamics between the colon and the brain play a big role in IBS. The symptoms can be greatly relieved with relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy. Since stress has been found to trigger IBS, it is important to deal with the mind when dealing with this disorder.
4)Alternative treatments – Taking supplements such as probiotics and undergoing acupunture have been found to be helpful for most patients.
