How Polyps in the Colon Are Removed

A colon polyp is an abnormal growth along your digestive tract. It is a fleshy tissue growing along the insides or lining of your colon. It is detected by undergoing colonoscopy. If your doctor sees a polyp along your colon, he will usually remove it. This is because colon cancer starts from a polyp. Of course, this does not mean that all polyps are cancerous.

Once your doctor detects a colon, he will use he will use the same tube used on colonoscopy to remove the polyp. This will not be painful because you will be sedated during the whole procedure. He will then send the removed part to the lab to see if it is cancerous. If there are polyps that are impossible to remove during the colonoscopy, your doctor will recommend an abdominal surgery. An abdonimal surgery is also the procedure done to remove cancerous polyps along the colon. This is done by making an incision on your abdomen and removing a part of the colon where there are polyps. The remaining colons are then connected together so that your digestive tract can function again.

If your doctor tells you that you have a polyp along your colon, there is no need to be alarmed. Unless of course you are informed that the polyp is cancerous. Still, if it turns out that you have this dreaded disease, you still have several options when it comes to treatment.
