How Does Colonic Irrigation Work?

One of the more controversial methods of cleansing the colon is a practice known as ‘colonic irrigation.’ It has gained some popularity in recent years but the procedure itself has been around even from the times of ancient Egypt. There are individuals who swear by it, while there are people on the other side of the fence who claim that it is invasive, dangerous and totally unnecessary. With all the natural and safe products available today, many naturopaths and medical doctors prefer less drastic measures.

No one disputes the fact that regular colon cleansing is beneficial. But the inherent dangers in the colonic irrigation process can cause more harm than good. It needs to be performed by trained medical professionals because water is being forced through the colon. There is a very real danger of rupturing the walls of the large intestine which could result in severe and potentially life threatening situations.

The procedure involves the patient lying on their side while a tube is inserted through the anus and rectum into the large intestine. Water and minerals are then inserted through the colon to break up compacted waste matter from the intestinal walls. It is removed through a second tube inserted to drain that water and waste. Usually a good course of probiotics is prescribed as aftercare to replace the friendly flora that were washed away with the toxins.

There are safe and effective bulk-forming fiber laxatives on the market today that are not invasive and can do the job well. Many people to a total fiber cleanse a couple times a year and either supplement with fiber or eat high fiber diets the rest of the year. While keeping the colon flushed free of toxins provides many health benefits, it is necessary to make absolutely sure you are achieving this as safely as possible.
