How A Colonoscopy Helped Me Know the Status of my Colon

A little over a year ago, I underwent a colonoscopy. My doctor recommended the procedure because I experienced some changes in my bowel habits and lost a lot of weight.

A day before the procedure, I was given four oral laxatives, an enema, and suppositories that were also laxatives. I took the oral laxatives the night before the operation, right after I had my last meal. I also had to administer the enema to help cleanse my colon. The events that transpired right after taking these medicines were not enjoyable. I experienced cramping and diarrhea right away. I was in a lot of pain and it made me a lot more scared about the actual procedure. The next morning, I woke up early to administer the suppositories. They made my colon remove waste rapidly and uncomfortably as well.

Thankfully, when I arrived at the hospital, I was very calm. The nurse took my blood pressure and asked me to change into a hospital gown. After leading me to the bed, she injected a sedative into my arm and I was knocked out right after. But this did not mean that I did not wake up during the procedure. It was very painful and the pain was enough to wake me from my sedative-induced sleep. But the procedure was ended after a quarter of an hour and I was allowed to rest before the results were explained to me.

I found out that I had no polyps but a simple infection. The procedure was painful but I’m glad I did it.
