Having a Colonoscopy to Check your Colon

Last year, I experienced symptoms related to a dysfunctional colon. My weight dropped drastically and my bowel habits changed. Concerned, my doctor said that he’d have to check inside my colon. He recommended a colonoscopy. Right after I got home, I researched what the procedure entailed. I was relieved that it was a minor operation and that it took no more than 20 minutes. My biggest concern, however, was the pain involved. Apparently, despite the anesthesia, some patients still felt pain. Incomparable pain, according to some.

In preparation for the procedure, I had to clean my colon. My doctor gave me laxatives and an enema. He also advised not to have a meal right after dinner the night before. During the procedure, I had my boyfriend with me. According to some resources on the Internet, it is important to have someone with you because the anesthesia will leave you groggy after the procedure.

The moment the anesthesia was injected into me, I fell into deep sleep. The procedure took about 15 minutes but I slept for about an hour after it. When I came to, my boyfriend was taking instructions from the nurse about what medicines I had to take. Thankfully, I learned that my colon was not suffering from anything serious.

I know that a lot of people are scared to have a colonoscopy. In my opinion, though, the procedure is a minor matter compared to knowing what really is wrong with you. Your colon is very important. If it is not functioning the way it should, a colonoscopy is an imported procedure to have.
