Goldenseal for Intestinal Infections

When the colonists first came over from Europe they were introduced to Goldenseal by Native Americans. Since the colonial days in the United States, it has been used for a number of health related issues and it has actually proven to be one of the herbs that can really perform as it is supposed to. So many medicinal herbs are based on nothing more than myths but Goldenseal actually has endured scientific testing and clinical analysis to treat such things as:

  • digestion problems
  • yeast infections
  • liver conditions
  • diarrhea

Along with being able to treat digestive disorders, Goldenseal is also effective in treating eye irritations and skin disorders. Many people find it extremely soothing for infections of the mucous membranes so it is often drank as a tea for colds, flus and infections affecting intestinal walls. It can be taken in supplement form, as a tea, a tincture and even made into an ointment for external, topical use.

Research has proven that Goldenseal is effective against a variety of bacteria, yeast, and fungi, such as E. Coli and even Candida. Because of this it is a common ingredient in colon cleansing and detoxification supplements such as Advanced Colon.

While side effects are extremely rare they can include nausea, irritation of the mouth and throat and sometimes even digestive problems. Again, these are extremely rare and may have a direct correlation to individuals with seasonal allergies.

Goldenseal should not be taken by pregnant women because one of its constituents is berberine which has been reported to have caused uterine contractions. Also its safety has not been determined for use with infants or children. However, for other adults suffering from any of the above mentioned health related issues, Goldenseal has proven to be a safe naturopathic remedy.
