Funtions of the Colon

Your colon is an important organ of your body. It is about five feet long and is part of the digestive system. It is the organ between the small intestine and the rectum. The following are the main functions of the colon:

1)Absorb vitamins – your small intestine also works on absorbing nutrients from your food but your colon’s job in absorbing vitamins and electrolytesl is also important. The good bacteria in your colon are the ones who produce these vitamins. This is why it is important for you to have a good number of good bacteria in your colon. If they are overrun by bad bacteria, your colon will not function properly.
2)Eliminate waste – Undigested food, bad bacteria, and other toxins are harmful for your body. If you do not remove them from your system, your whole body will be contaminated and your health will suffer. This is where the colon comes to the rescue. Waste is in the form of stool and it is moved from your body through the anus.

In order to keep your colon functioning properly, a diet high in fiber is important. Fiber is needed by the good bacteria in your colon to produce important vitamins. Fiber is also needed to add bulk to your waste so that your stool will be easily removed from your body.
