Early Detection of Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths today. Many people from the Western world suffer and perish from this deadly disease every year. This is a scary situation but we there is something we can do to detect this disease early. After all, early detection contributes to better recovery from this form of cancer.
Symptoms of colon cancer include change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, black or bloody stool, and many others. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor right away. He will recommend a minor operation called colonoscopy. This low-risk procedure will enable your doctor to see inside your colon using a fiber optic camera attached to a tube. If your doctor sees a polyp or abnormal growth in your colon, he will remove and test it to see if it is cancerous. If he does see cancerous growth, he will immediately recommend treatment. This will depend on the level of cancer that your doctor observed. There are also numerous other screening tests your doctor might recommend just to make sure if what you really have is cancer.
Common treatment of colon cancer are surgery and chemotherapy. In surgery, the part of the colon that has been affected with cancer is removed. The simple removal of a polyp during a colonoscopy is already a surgical operation. Treatment may is also administered if the cancer has affected other areas of the body.
