Dietary Fiber to Keep Your Colon Cleansed
Although we have all heard it said that we should eat foods rich in natural fiber, most of us aren’t really aware of what fiber actually is. For years it was referred to as ‘roughage’ but now it is trendier to refer to it as fiber. Everyone from the American Heart Association to the National Cancer Institute is advising consumers to eat more dietary fiber.
The funny thing is that even though you will be chewing up and swallowing more ‘fiber’ you really aren’t eating it. There is no real nutritive value because fiber is insoluble and it passes through the intestines in order to help keep things moving. That’s the thing most people aren’t aware of.
Dietary fiber is a part of the plant that you eat but your body can’t digest or absorb. The best source is fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Your body can’t digest the fiber component of those foods so it passes through your intestines pretty much intact.
The beauty is that it also takes everything in its path along with it. If you are getting plenty of dietary fiber then you shouldn’t need to worry about a toxic or impacted colon. However, since most people eat diets that are high in extremely processed foods it becomes necessary to take fiber supplements to cleanse and detoxify the colon.
Of course it is always better to consume more natural dietary fiber to keep the colon cleansed, but since it is unrealistic to believe people will readily change their dietary habits, dietary fiber is available in supplements. Cleansing the colon should at least be performed two to three times per year if you are not getting sufficient dietary fiber to keep your system cleansed of toxins and in optimal condition.
