Crohn’s Disease and Aloe Supplements

Crohn’s Disease is often hard to diagnose because it resembles so many other digestive tract illnesses. It tends to manifest itself as ulcerations on the walls of the upper intestines. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain and diarrhea. While it is unknown exactly what causes Crohn’s Disease, it is theorized that it may be a reaction to foods. Perhaps the immune system mistakes certain foods as bacteria and goes on the attack trying to fight them. As a result blood begins to collect on the digestive tract walls and ulcers are formed. It may be that the disposition towards Crohn’s Disease may be genetic. Around one-fifth of all people have a family history of the disease and it is more prevalent in people in their 20’s.

Common complications of the disease are severe diarrhea leading to dehydration. Also abscesses may form in the intestines necessitating treatment with antibiotics. It is treated in much the same way as diverticular disease, but whereas diverticulitis affects the large intestines, Crohn’s disease tends to affect the small intestines.

Because there is a very real possibility that, due to inflammation, sufficient nutrients will not be absorbed. One of the treatments involves a potent vitamin and mineral supplement.

Many naturopathic practitioners believe that aloe helps to not only heal the ulcerations, but also helps to prevent recurrence. The gel like substance soothes the intestinal lining, promoting healing. Aloe supplements can be found in health food stores, at herbal apothecaries and online as well. Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements for the first time.
