Colon Cleansing Herbs That Promote Peristalsis

Most of us are aware of the fact that foods need to be digested and moved through the intestines until they are eliminated through the rectum and anus. Unfortunately, what many of us aren’t aware of is how that happens. The actual biological term is called peristalsis which can be simply defined as muscle contractions that move in waves down the intestines to push foods through.

There are probably a multitude of reasons why there is a breakdown in peristalsis; however one study out of the University of Michigan indicated that hyperglycemia (diabetes) seems to inhibit peristalsis, thus inducing diabetic constipation. For whatever reason, it is necessary for foods to be moved through the intestines in order to be eliminated so there are times when we need to stimulate the smooth muscles that are responsible for this.

Fortunately there are herbs that are known to promote peristalsis. Turkey rhubarb, Cayenne pepper garlic rhizome are among the herbs that are most commonly used to promote smooth muscle contractions in the colon. Fennel is also effective and often part of a cleansing supplement.

Used in conjunction with bulk-forming laxatives, these herbs help to promote a total colon cleansing and detoxification. While fiber will swell and loosen impacted matter from the walls of the intestines, there are times that this, in itself, is not sufficient to move waste through and out of the body. A combination of peristalsis promoting ingredients in conjunction with muciligenic fiber seems to be the best option for an efficient cleansing supplement.
