Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer or large bowel cancer. In colon cancer, the colon, appendix and the rectum have cancerous growths within them. Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the world. It is also the second leading cause of cancer related deaths around the world. Colon Cancer alone causes over 655,000 deaths worldwide every year.
In most cases, colon cancer starts out as small, benign polyps in the colon, which turn into malignant cancerous tumors over a period of time. Diagnoses of colon cancer are usually made through a process called colonoscopy. Colon cancer is usually treated with surgery to remove the malignant cancer tumors and is usually followed with chemotherapy.
One of the factors that could increase the risk of a person developing colon cancer is a person’s diet. Research has proven that people with unhealthy diets and diets that are rich in red meat are at a much higher risk of cancer than people who eat nutritionally wholesome food. On the other hand, people whose diet is rich in fish, poultry, fruits and vegetables lead to lower risks of colon cancer. Food which is high in fiber is also known to reduce the risk of colon cancer. This is because fibrous food helps in proper digestion of food and excretion of waste material.
