A Brief History of Colon Cleansing

colonIn recent years there has been a resurgence in the belief that colon cleansing is beneficial to maintaining good health. Although the concept is by no means new, it has gone in and out of favor with medical practitioners and it has only recently come back to the forefront as a necessary process.

The benefits of colon cleansing were first documented as far back as the ancient Egyptians in 1500 B.C. They believed that toxins released as a by-product of decomposition of foods in the intestines would infiltrate the body through the bloodstream and cause a number of illnesses and diseases. They believed that the colon needed to be totally evacuated in order to protect the body from being attacked by these toxins.

Over the centuries this concept of “auto-intoxication” has come in and out of ‘vogue.’ It really wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that modern science and microbiology began to support this concept with some real proof. Still, there are critics who believe that the body has a ‘waste disposal system’ that works well enough without the need to flush it out.

Taking that into consideration, why does the National Heart Institute recommend that we increase our intake of daily fiber if the colon is so effective in working on its own without the assistance of cleansers? It’s amazing that something like colon cleansing that has been around for so many millennia is still being openly debated. Historically, we have come around full circle and even prestigious organizations like the NHI are recommending fiber as an effective way to maintain heart health through keeping the system cleansed.
